UK Games Day 2009

It's that time again, when Warhammer and 40k fans from around the UK (not to mention a few other countries), congregate in a big convention hall to battle each other, paint miniatures, check out the latest Black Library novels and generally have the best time since... sliced bread (to quote Alan Partridge).

I had a blast at Games Day a few years back, one of the highlights of which was obviously meeting Black Library super-fan Xhalax, and I always regret living so damned far away that I can't consistently make an appearance. Instead, you'll all have to 'make do' (hah!) with Nick Kyme, Graham McNeill, Jim Swallow, Dan Abnett (only for a little while this year - get well soon, Dan), Aaron Dembski-Bowden, and a whole bunch of others.

Though I can't make it myself, Rynn's World will still have a presence. In fact, attendees will be able to pick up one of these cool bookmarks at the event:

Pretty nice, right? It's the first time a bookmark has ever promoted one of my books - a strange kind of writerly milestone, but a milestone nevertheless.

If you're going to UK Games Day, I hope you'll have an absolute blast. In fact, I know you will. And who knows, maybe I'll get to attend next year. Fingers crossed.

Guess I'll just have to 'make do' then.

*sulks*

Though I don't know what I'll do for yet another year without mistaking you for Simon Pegg. However, it was great to meet you too. And I remember extolling the virtues of Rebel Winter to you and how my favourite character survived and that I hoped there'd be more from the Vostroyans....give or take a word or five.

2 days to Games Day! I'm so excited!

You guys never do a Games Day in Denmark, nor do you come signing our books :(
I know we're small, but we have a Games Workshop too and it's not particularly expensive travelling here (if you're not a student, or I'd have gone the other way to Games Day)...
Oh well, guess I'll have to read without that fancy, kickass bookmark.

The Emperor be with you.

@Xhalax:

Hah! Simon Pegg wishes he was this pumped! (and I wish I had his money, talent, success, property, Hollywood connections, awesome body of work in movies and television, etc. etc.)

@Peter:
Denmark from Tokyo actually is pretty expensive (and far), but you're right, some of the UK-based writers should pop over for a signing sometime. Are you sure Dan Abnett has never done a signing there?

Dan did GD Germany a couple of months back. And both he and Graham McNeill have been present at GD France too.

As for Games Day elsewhere.....it would be best to petition Games Workshop since they're the parent company.

And maybe you and Simon Pegg could become some sort of symbioic being and you get the best of both worlds. But either way, but it'd be great to see you again and speak of Rynn's World and have me bitch over the fact that I lent out my copy of Gunheads and (at least still to this moment in time after about four months, along with a host of other books) haven't got it back.

Ok....I'm angry about my missing books now so I'll leave before I start properly ranting.

@Xhalax:

You... you lent out your copy of Gunheads? Think of my lost royalty money! I won't be able to afford any rice next week. ;)

Hope you get it back alright.

We missed you there, Steve.

That absolutely kick ass banner for Rynn's World was amazing, though. In spirit, if nothing else then mate. :-)

Some very nice blog posts, I must say (and very remiss of me not to be checking in more regularly to comment on them individually).

I think particularly awesome are the real life tankers who loved Gunheads. What an amazing thing to have real soldiers loving your work.

All good stuff, and I'll be checking in more regularly from here on in (I try to as a rule, but like you 'go dark' when I'm nearing the completion of a novel - which is now...).

Congrats on the anniversary too. It's good to have a point of contact, I think.

Long live 'red-stevie.com' and all who pontificate through her! :-)

At this rate, I may have to buy a second copy.

Though Gunheads, along with Rebel Winter were two such books I was recommending only yesterday to a friend who wants to start reading more BL books (I'm a big Heresy, Cain and Time of Legends fan but is looking to expand).

And lending of books is the great lament I live with being one of the few of my friends that is a) in full time employment. b) has fewer financial constrains and c) sack loads of time to read couple with an insatiable thirst for BL.

If it makes you feel any better....it'll be recommendations only from now on....that and I snagged an extra bookmark or two to distribute to those deserving.
