I'm Surrounded!
I can't seem to turn around without bumping into a Space Marine at the moment, which is, of course, a good thing. It seems the next place they'll be turning up is on the Xbox360 and the Playstation3 (thanks to Jack for the tip-off).
This being the season of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the biggest video-gaming event of the year, gaming news abounds, and none of it is more exciting for us 40k-bots than word of the upcoming THQ/Relic Entertainment title Space Marine. Okay, so whoever came up with the title didn't get overtime pay, but it tells you everything you need to know, right?
Some of you may already have seen this news over on Nick Kyme's blog. If not, head over there now and check out the link to the excellent promotional video. It's a beauty! Look out for that ork warboss at the end. What a monster!
Anyway, rather than duplicate Nick's content, here's a look at the promo artwork which is currently doing the rounds:

In other news, the first draft of Rynn's World is about two-thirds complete and is definitely going to go beyond the initially specified word count. There's just so much story to tell, so expect a few extra pages for your buck, all jam-packed with blazing bolters and blown-out brain-pans (without quite so much alliteration, thankfully).
Other than that, my back injury has healed up nicely, so I'm back to training as hard as ever. That's critical for me as, if I'm not doing some type of training on an almost daily basis, my head gets a bit messed up. Gotta have balance.
Reading: Horus Heresy - The Collected Visions and anything at all by Peter 'Mr. Awesome' Benchley
Watching: BBC's Horizon (What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity?, Most of Our Universe is Missing, How to Make Better Decisions, etc.)
Listening to: Jim Swallow's Heart of Rage (or rather, I soon will be)
Playing: nothing until Tekken 6 comes out later this year

See...it's this sort of thing that makes me wonder if our GW rep:
a) told me fibs
or
b) really doesn't have his ear to the ground.
When DoW2 came out, I remember having a conversation with him about making 40K games on various other platforms other than the PC, like they've done with Squad Command.....after all, online multiplayer gaming is pretty well cemented in the current next gen consoles.
Plus I think via the consoles, rather than PC, there's a better change of getting a heap of downloadable content to make stuff even better.
The general conclusion of the conversation was.....pretty much non-commital really, with a nudge towards the side of keeping it PC for the time being.
But apparently not...and that makes me happy!
Trailer looks AWESOME! And since I'm hip deep in Dynasty Warriors 6 at the moment, I think I'll be well trained to take on an Ork horde...especially since I've been training with nothing more than sticks (both pointy and not pointy) and knives and big-ass maces.
And kudos on the larger word count too Mr. Parker!
Hi Xhalax,
You know, this announcement about THQ's Space Marine seems to have taken a lot of people by surprise, including BL staffers. If I remember correctly, game licenses and the like are handled by a specialised department at GW, and press releases are always carefully timed. So, I wouldn't be too mad or disappointed in your local GW rep. He's probably just as surprised and excited by the news as you are. :)
The Dawn of War games were great, so I'm sure Relic Entertainment will do a great job with Space Marine.
Dynasty Warriors 6, you say? I haven't played that one. Then again, I haven't played much of anything for ages... and Chapter Master Kantor of the Crimson Fists is telling me to keep it that way, at least for now.
I'm not about to disobey the Chapter Master. ;)
I'm never all that mad at my local GW rep, I usually know more about what's going on in the company (especially with releases) than he does....so I like to keep him on the right track.
As for the Dawn of War games, I've only actually played the first one. After that, my laptop was unable to support them. Although I did try and play Soul Storm a few months ago and was surprised that it worked, however it's hideously slow on the animation and takes ages to load so I stopped playing....that and the Guard keep mashing my Sisters while I try to knock out their Baneblade factory. I tried to get a new computer for DoW2, but failed since no desktop seems to have wi-fi these days, and those that do don't have the graphics card to support it, which is what made me lament about THQ/Relic not doing the games for the other platforms.
I really do hope that Space Marine is well received. Squad Command seemed to be, though nowadays I see a lot of copies in the 'pre-owned' games section...and I mean A LOT. And sometimes I don't blame people for giving the copies up as I'm habitually stuck on mission 3....so we'll have too see.
Hope they have a Space Marine section at Games Day I can go have a mooch around.
And yup, Dynasty Warriors is the reason why I've taken up knitting again, so that I don't play it constantly. It's all my friend's fault as she LOVES Dynasty Warriors. And after mashing countless peons, I can see why. It's possibly the most fun and yet most frustrating game I've ever played in my life.
Also, I don't think that even the whole of the Three Kingdoms could stand against Pedro Kanto....so I think you better do as he says...while I am going to sit outside in the sun and read Double Eagle, because there's no PS3 outside in the sun.
Take that modern technology!
Xhalax,
I can't imagine you knitting, unless, that is, you're making an olive-coloured jumper and an SAS-style balaclava. That, I could imagine.
Squad Command wasn't a big hit with me, I'm afraid. I gave it a fair shot, mostly because Graham (McNeill) worked on it a bit and, well, it's 40k. But, like you, I found it hard going. I think I got to level five before giving up.
DoW2 won't run on my PC, so that one is out, though I loved the first game and the Winter Assault follow-up. Bloody PCs.
Double Eagle, by the way, is a great book, and you're sure to love it. So stick it to your PS3! Who needs games, right?
...
Right?
